Turn your physical Linux or Windows machine into virtual machine for free

We will focus on creating this masterpiece in the Windows environment but do not worry. The same rules can be used in any operating system that can run Virtual

The overall benefit of implementing this method is threefold. One, cost savings on energy, climate control and space required will be seen immediately. Two, management and flexibility increase significantly due to the fact that virtual disk and virtual networks can be expanded up or down with finer grained control. Three, redundancy and faster disaster recovery provided by cloud service. Especially when it's tied to your existing internet location for seamless transition when a disaster occurs.

While this process can be completed in many ways with different software, this is how I know and all the tools needed are free.

Sounds hard? No, sweat, but where do we start first?

Well, we must get a photo of the physical machine on removable media (USB disk). I recommend the USB drive and only USB drive for the space the image will record. We will also need a USB flash drive that is at least 2 GB in size to use as bootable media to restore backup and restore.

Connect the USB disk to the USB port and open the folder structure. Create a folder at a place you can remember I. D: "Your computer's name". This is the place where we will upload the files from our original physical image to. After it's done, release the USB drive by right-clicking the "Safe Remove Hardware" icon in your taskbar and clicking Eject "What your USB drive is named", unplug the USB port.

Next, We need to create a bootable USB to load backup backup and restore. Download a small application called "YUMI". YUMI will create a bootable USB drive for backup and restore it. Also, take a copy of Backup Backup and Recovery, save both files to your desktop or select.

Now run YUMI and select your USB drive from the list (Remember to choose your USB drive and not your USB HDD that should be disconnected anyway!). Select "Restore backup and restore" from the software list for which you can create installer. Click the "Browse" button to search for Restore Backup and Recovery.iso to hide the profile. Finally, click "create" to start bootable restore backup and restore bootable USB creation process. When this is done, YUMI will ask you if you want to add more distros, just say "no". Remove USB from the computer by using the "Secure Remove Hardware" icon in the taskbar, and click Eject "What your USB drive is named" and unplug the USB drive. Please keep Backup and Recovery. We'll need it later.

Make sure that the body computer you want to virtualize is in a relieved state, if not, turn off the computer. Just insert the USB drive to the computer. Turn on the computer and press the correct key to access the boot menu, or make sure that the USB drive is set to launch before an infrared disk is on the computer. Select USB entry to boot, YUMI should now load. Select the entry for "Tools" and "Redo Backup and Recovery". Press Enter on the Redo menu to start the memory O / S. When restoring backup and recovery is downloaded, install USB HDD and give it about 20 seconds.

Open recovery and recovery software:

1. Select "Backup"

2. Select your disk to back up (disk of the body)

3. Select your partitions to back up (usually the entire partition and MBR)

4. On the "Destination Drive" screen, select "Connected directly to my computer" and click on a browser.

5. Locate the file folder we previously did I. D: "Computer Name" click OK.

6. Select the name of the disc. I will usually choose the day, click next. The backup will take from 1 hour to 3 hours depending on the hard disk and computer speed.

Congratulations on having a full backup of your physical machine. Please click "Close" on the recovery and recovery application and select the power button in the bottom right corner of the screen. Select "Shutdown" and shut down the computer.

Now let's turn this physical machine into virtual machine!

Open the Virtual Box and select "New". Give your virtual machine a name and choose the type of virtual machine that will be and the version. Choose the memory size, I'm usually 2 GB = 2048 MB if I'm going to run it on a machine that has 4 GB of physically installed heap. Create the new disk, choose VHD as the file type on your hard drive, click next. Select "Dynamically assigned" for storage, click next. Give your VHD disk name, I'll usually name it by running it, hence mentioning what you name your computer. Make the VHD disk big enough to store your operating system, I will usually choose 200GB to be on a safe side. Again, this depends on the amount of physical data of your physical computer. You have now returned to the Virtual Box Manager screen with your new World Cup. Make sure your Virtual Box support has been installed. Get an extension for your software version and set it up as follows:

In the Virtual Box, click File -> Preferences -> Extensions -> Add Package -> Find Additional File and Select. It will be installed automatically.

Prepare trade! Use only option A or Option B:

Option A: If you can get a USB support that works in the Virtual Box:

Make sure you Have installed extension pack and setup USB access properly, if you have any problems refer to the Virtual Box document here:

In the Virtual Box, click on your name on World Cup and select "Settings" at the top, select "Storage." Click on the empty CD / DVD icon and then the CD / DVD icon to the right under "Attributes" and select Restore backup and restore ISO and click "OK". At this point, you have recovered backup and recovery.iso on ready and nts. VHD to install. All you need to do now is to insert your USB drive and skip option B because you do not have to execute it.

Option B: If you can not get USB support to work in the Virtual Box. No problem, what happened to me so I found out about it.

In Virtual Box, click on your name on World Cup and select "Settings" at the top, select "Storage", select "Add hard drive" Next to Controller: Sata or Controller: IDE whatever you have. Select "Create new disk", select VHD and restore it 200GB. Give Dynamically and name the "Installer". Under "Storage Tree", click on the empty CD / DVD icon and then the CD / DVD icon on the right side under "Attributes" and select Restore Backup and Recovery ISO and click "OK." At this point, you have recovered backup and recovery.iso on ready and nts. VHD named after your computer and another black VHD called Installer. Now close Virtual Box and right click on "Computer" and select "Manage." Left click on "Disk Management" and then click "Disk Management" again and select "Attach VHD". Search for the location of your VHD installer that you created in the Virtual Box, usually in the "My Documents" folder and click OK. Now you can copy the physical security image we took from D: "Your Computer's Name" to Installer VHD. After the content has been copied, right-click your computer's management again and click "Disconnect VHD." Open the Virtual Box and continue to the next step.

Lets Convert This Thing!

When you have either USB support or Setup VHD Setup and Recovery Backup and Recovery ISO party. Press "Start" on the World Cup name in the Virtual Box. You must meet familiar recovery and restore boot settings, press enter to continue. Back up and restore applications if it did not start automatically. Select "Restore". In a nutshell, choose where the backup is "The Source Drive" (USB HDD or Installer VHD if applicable) and where to install the image (blank VHD named after your computer). After you choose to install in a blank VHD, confirm the prompt to transfer all information and let recovery process begin. After it's done, click Close and close Backup and Recovery as you did before. World Cup should stop running. Click "Settings" from the Virtual Box Manager and disconnect the backup and restore the ISO and VHD Setup Utility, if applicable. Leave your VHD with your computer name or whatever you name it and click "OK" to return to Virtual Box Manager.

You should celebrate many uses of this power, little VHD!

You must look at "Start". You can transfer this VHD and include it in any Virtual Box VM instance or even VMware if you are so inclined. You can run it on your local criteria or send it to the cloud. Cloudy examples of this World Cup would either need to run Virtual Box in a cloudy case or run it native to a cloudy space if hosting provider supports it.

A: This is because all entries for hda ##, hdb ## and so on have been changed to sd ## extc in the backup and recovery. First, copy your delicious VHD so you will not lose your work if something goes wrong. Then all you have to do is remove the backup and restore ISO, restart your VM and pick up the terminal. Attach the root space and change the entries in GRUB or Lilo to the correct boot device. For example: in GRUB, the entries are included in menu.Ist and fstab. In Lilo, they are included in /etc/lilo.config and then / sbin / lilo -v to write the changes.

Q: When I try to run my Windows PC Startup?

A: Get a copy or a Windows disk and attach it within the Virtual Box and make sure it is installed first. Select the "Repair" option. Select "Start Up Repair" and let it run. If this does not happen, return to the "Repair" option and select "Command Prompt." Try these commands one by one, close and disconnect the Windows disk every time to check if the problem has been corrected:
