The kitchen administration software basically has electronic menu systems and order processing on monitors and manual POS systems. This includes a variety of other activities that open and operate information stored in a single database, timing, asset management, stock management, security and catering.

As in any computer system, the restaurant POS also needs input and output devices for the various departments. Some restaurants have a keyboard or touch screen display as input devices, while others use electronic cash registers as input and output devices. As sophisticated cash registers, the restaurant POS assimilates and disseminates information to customers' needs, with printers and monitors at various, convenient locations, and connects to the server in the back office via an interface.

Choosing input and output devices and appropriate software for a given restaurant is a careful consideration of any activity that needs to be monitored in food-based POS systems.
