PowerMat is an exciting new wireless charging technology. It was first introduced in 2008 and early 2009 and is now available for purchase at home and office.
So what is PowerMat? This is a small device that uses wireless charging to charge the most important gadgets – for example, mobile phones (including iPhone and Blackberry), video games (including Nintendo DS) and iPod – without being connected to a charger or they would be attached to the wall. Of course, the PowerMat is plugged into the wall and connected to a power cord, but from now on it's all wireless. Throw your device on the PowerMat and charge it wirelessly without doing anything.
So how does PowerMat wireless charging work?
The technology behind PowerMat is called "electromagnetic induction" (or just "magnetic induction"). Michael Faraday is usually discovered by discovering the induction phenomenon of 1831, while others were working in the same field at that time.
This electromagnetic induction is formally defined as "a voltage in a variable magnetic field or a conductor moving through a vertical magnetic field," but that does not mean much to most people. A better way to do this is to use a device that transmits electricity through a shared magnetic field.
Consider this layout:
1. Place the electricity in a wire coil
2. This will create a magnetic field around the roll that affects any metal metal (as shown by Faraday)
3. Quickly change the field in time and generate electricity in the metal.
So what happens when a PowerMat is charged to generate rapidly changing magnetic fields over the carpet; these receivers are transformed into electrical devices on any device of the carpet, thus charging these devices. Magnetic fields and electrical currents, of course, are very small, so they can work with handheld devices without having a health risk to people.
The same technology is used in many other devices and systems, including generators, motors, transformers, some cookers, induction welds, and so on. Perhaps the most popular example for most people is the refillable electric toothbrushes where the toothbrush is known to be "dock" daily. However, they may not know that similar systems work with electric guitar pickups, video cassette players, and computer graphics boards.
PowerMat is currently the best known wireless charger, but this technology is rapidly evolving and will soon be visible in many other applications and products. The PowerMat company itself is planning to expand the technology and place it on kitchen counters, walls and other surfaces at home. One day this technology can be used everywhere and will be invisible so they will be so common. Finally, we get rid of the infinite knot of chargers and wires around our home.
