How to make calls to your iPod Touch

Last December we visited my brother in San Antonio, Texas. He worked a lot on that day and we did not see it since I came from Italy. I was alone and every 30 minutes I was invited to see if she finished her job and picked it up. To his surprise, I first called him and told him, "Hey, if you're ready, just call me that number … I'll answer your iPod Touch!" Just wondering: NO, you do not need a cluttering iPod Touch to do it! Anywhere, you have to get an external microphone to work it.

So this was my position: I was in another country and had to contact someone else. There was no cell phone, but there was an iPod Touch! Of course I have to thank you for the free WiFi connection in the Austin Capitol. That was the perfect place to wait for my brother's call. I had a nice time in the guided tour. So, check what you need to do:

Create SIP Account

I'm using Callcentric for my SIP account. Just go to and sign up for a free account.

SIP client installation

The SIP client used here is the MixPhone. Mixphone is a mobile app that allows you to make free voice calls directly from your iPhone and iPod touch. Can be installed free of charge from the iTunes Store. Use your username and password at for your SIP client. Use the name for the domain.

Get Your Free Phone Number

I used ipKall for free number. They only have four different area codes (do not complain … free of charge!): 206, 253, 360, 425. Go to their registration page at and register for a free account. You will need to re-enter the information from so you can associate a number with your account. It takes a few days to get the number and if you receive it, use the bill. If your account is inactive for more than 30 days, it will not be used.
