Generator maintenance checklist for diesel generators

The industrial generator (aka genset) may last for decades, but only if properly maintained. Although the generator has few moving parts, it contains sensitive components that require regular attention. The maintenance of the entire kit requires various measures related to different schedules. If you need a schedule for implementing these measures, here is a basic checklist for maintenance of the diesel generator on a daily, monthly, semi-annual and annual basis.

  • Daily Measures

    Diesel generators should take the following measures per day:

    • General check – Check the kit for loose parts, signs of corrosion on the parts,.
    • Checking the Coolant Heating Check – Check that the coolant heater is correctly positioned and check the signs of wear.
    • Oil Check – Check the oil level and add oil if necessary.
    • Fuel Check – Check the fuel level and fuel as needed.
    • Checking Fill-Air Pipeline – Make sure that the fill-air pipe is well connected to the radiator and check the signs of wear.

    Maintenance staff usually perform the above actions. Generator technicians can also make them part of a scheduled service agreement.

    Weekly Measures

    Diesel generators must take the following measures per week:

    • Air Purification Check – Check the air purifier for debris and clean if necessary.
    • Check Battery Charger – Check the charging voltage reading and adjust the voltage if necessary.
    • Fuel Filter Drain – Lower the water from the bottom of the fuel filter housing.
    • Draining Fuel Tank – Lower the water from the bottom of the fuel tank until the diesel fuel is displayed.

    Many facilities generator technicians perform weekly measures on a generator maintenance checklist. If carried out by the maintenance personnel of the building, provision should be made for the maintenance of the generator.

    Monthly Measures

    Diesel generators must perform the following measures on a monthly basis:

    • Refrigerant Concentration Control – Take one sample of the refrigerant with a hydrometer and check its concentration in the service book from the manufacturer.
    • Checking the belt tension – Check the belt tension and check the signs of wear.
    • Exhaust Gas Condensate Drain – Replace the condensate from the condensate tap.
    • Battery Check – Check charging starter battery and inspect the connections for slack and corrosion.

    Half-yearly measures

    Diesel generators must perform the following measures every six months:

    • Oil and filter replacement – Replace the oil and oil filter regardless of whether or not the kit has been used for a simulated power outage.
    • Coolant Fluid Filter Switching – Replace the coolant filter regardless of whether the kit was used in a non-simulated power failure.
    • Crankcase Breathing Purification – Clean the crankcase skin according to the handheld manual.
    • Air Purifier Replacement – Replace the air purifier, regardless of the amount of debris accumulation.
    • Check radiator hose – Check radiator hose connections and check for signs of wear.
    • Fuel Filter Replacement – Replace the fuel filter, regardless of the amount of sediment accumulation.

    Generator technicians must implement the above measures.

    Annual Measures

    The kit must be thoroughly cleaned on its cooling system.


    The above measures are necessary to keep the diesel generator in excellent condition. By installing the generator on the maintenance checklist, you can prepare the generator at the facility for the next power outage.

    Although the maintenance staff of the building may perform some maintenance measures, many of them deal with parts and types that are typical of diesel generators. Unless the maintenance staff provides training on these measures, they must carry out a power supply with emergency power supplies in Carolinas.
