Bob Ross Oil Painting Technique – Frequently Asked Questions

This technique refers to the softening of hard edges and the most visible brush strokes by mixing a wet oil paint on a canvas with a clean, dry brush. While mixing, paint the already painted area with very light glossy sanding or gently touching the brush. This gives the colors a soft and natural look. Not all oil paints are suitable for this technique – most are too soft and prone to smear. Only a thick, solid paint is suitable for this technique.


To mix paints and marble effects, place different colored paintings in the mixing area of ​​the palette, and use the palette to collect and collapse the paintings, and then pull the sheet down. The stripes of each color must be visible in the mixture. Do not mix.


When applying paints on canvas to thicker paints, especially when adding high colors, thin the paint with LIQUID WHITE, LIQUID CLEANER or ODOR. The rule to note here is that a thin paint sticks to a thicker paint.


Wet wet dyeing requires frequent and thorough cleaning of the brushes with a paint thinner. An empty kilo of coffee is ideal for keeping the diluent or using any container with a diameter of about 5 "and at least 6". Place a Bob Ross screen at the bottom of the box and fill it with a more odorless diluent, approx. 1 cm above the screen.

Dry the larger brushes, gently squeezing them inside the coffee pot, and then brushing the bristles into a brush, to remove the thinner material from the rack in the thinner kitchen trash can, the smaller brushes can be cleaned with a paper towel or rag (use of a Viva paper towel is highly recommended because it is very absorbent). Never clean the Bob Ross brushes with soap and water or detergent, as this will destroy the natural strength of the bristles.


Use the 2 "brush that has long, solid, vertical and horizontal strokes on the canvas. use at least 16 "x20" palettes. Try to sort the colors on the outer edge of the palette from light to dark. Leave the center of the palette to mix the paints. Hold the brush at an angle of 45 degrees, pull the brush on the palette and remove it from the stack.

The BOB ROSS staining technique depends on the special solid paint of the base color. First and foremost, the Yellows used for light points are made thinner for easier mixing and application. Using the right equipment ensures the best possible results.

Liquid cleaning is a particularly exciting ingredient for wet wet painting. Like Liquid White / Black, it creates the smooth and slippery surface you need. In addition, Liquid Clear has the advantage of not diluting the intensity of other colors, especially in the dark, which are so important in painting marine landscapes. Don't forget to use Liquid Clear very carefully! The tendency is to use larger quantities than necessary because it is so difficult to see.

Mixing colors is one of the most rewarding and entertaining parts of painting, but there may be some of the most frightening procedures. Drying time depends on a number of factors, such as heat, humidity, paint thickness, paint surface, applied ink brand, dye used media, and the like. Another factor is the colors used. Different colors have different drying times (i.e., blue dries very quickly, while red, white and yellow dries very slowly). A good painting time, when an oil painting dries when this technique is painted, about a week.
